Hiking Related Questions

The La Sportiva Ultra II Mid Wide GTX is available for both men and women and is designed specifically for a wider foot. It's super light and breathable, making it the perfect hiking boot for fast-packing and day-hiking. For long distance hiking, the Lowas’ are also well suited for wide feet.

Hiking boots are typically sized one to one and a half sizes bigger than your typical shoe size! This allows for comfort on long descents so your toe isn't impacted by the front of the boot.

One of the best ways to start building out your own hiking first aid kit is by purchasing a pre-made group or personal first aid kit that suits you. From there you can add additional hiking accessories that might depend on your hiking trip location. For example, a Kokoda first aid kit would benefit from additional accessories like a snakebite compression bandage, tick remover and debugger.

Making sure you are equipped with a good quality hydration pack or water bottle for hiking is incredibly important. To ensure proper hydration on your trip, the amount you want to carry will vary based on the duration, route and speed.

For shorter trips, we recommend a 1 litre bottle or if you prefer to carry less bulk, a 2 litre hiking water bladder would be ideal. On a multiday hike, it is safer to have about 4 litres with you if possible, so we recommend you plan ahead for water stops on the route utilising water purification tablets and remember to bring a filter in your hiking backpack.

Yes! If you're looking to purchase a hiking pack through us, our expert team will be more than happy to size it and explain the principles of adjusting the pack to suit you.

There are benefits to both! Hiking boots offer a greater deal of ankle support and this can be super effective when carrying heavy loads. However, hiking shoes offer high durability and are typically lighter as well. It also depends on the terrain that you are exploring and the length of the experience.

The best way to pack your hiking pack is by using a layer system. Most often people will use a three to five layer order like so:

Pack your less used, light gear in the bottom of the backpack - this can also include your sleeping set up (like sleeping mat and bag)

Pack your heavy gear close to the centre of your backpack - this includes the water bladder, heavier tools and the bulk of your food

Pack the frequently used gear on top - clothing, wet weather gear, compass, first aid and pack protector

Check out our blog post for more information on how to pack a hiking backpack.

The size of your pack depends on where and how long you will be travelling for. We offer a wide variety of ultralight and smaller rescue packs to large, multiday hiking packs. You may also want to consider a womens or mens sized pack to better suit your frame.

Climbing Related Questions

Yes! We have partnerships with two climbing shoe resolers here at K2. Simply drop your shoes in store whenever you require a resole.

Yes we do! Both the La Sportiva Stickit Kids Climbing Shoe and the Red Chilli Durang Nano Kids Climbing Shoe are specifically designed for little feet!

The La Sportiva Tarantulace is super durable, comfortable and well-fitting, making it by far the most popular shoes for beginners. It has a quick and practical lacing system, and has a regular fit ideal for all types of feet.

Due to safety precautions, our harnesses are non-refundable so choosing the right climbing harness is best done in-store. Our climbing experts can also assist you with fitting on our chat, email or via a call. Besides meeting the standard safety requirements, our stock varies in extra features, colours, and sizing charts for you to explore.

Climbing harnesses should generally be replaced anywhere between 1-7 years. All harness materials degrade over time so make sure to regularly inspect and replace them even if it’s mostly been stored or never used. Regular climbers or experienced climbers should replace their harnesses annually and immediately after major falls.

The rope you select for your climb depends on a few variables. First, determine the activity you will be using the rope for, also be sure to consider what features and rope type (static, lightweight, etc.) best suits your needs. Choosing a suitable diameter and length are also important as this will impact the weight and durability of the rope.

Even rope that visibly shows no signs of damage will eventually need to be replaced. Different situations will influence how soon you may need to buy a new climbing rope, consider replacing your rope within a year or sooner if used heavily, within five years if occasionally used and no longer than ten years if scarcely used.

If you’re looking to start putting together your own climbing kit rather than renting from a rock climbing centre, you might want to consider the following gear:

- Rock climbing shoes

- Chalk bag

- Chalk

- Harness

- Belay device

- Large carabiner suitable for belaying

- Breathable sports clothing and

- Rope, especially if you’re interested in moving onto lead climbing, we can also help you out with a perfect lead climbing kit bundle.

Choosing your belay device is mostly up to your personal preference, and activity. At K2 we sort our belay devices based on the activity they are best suited for. Be sure to explore the brand and styles or brands that appeal to you.

Carabiners come in a variety of styles, sizes and locking mechanisms. At K2 we sort our carabiners based on the activity they are best suited for. Be sure to take a look at our page to view the variety and brands we carry and choose your carabiner based on your activity and weight requirements.

The type of quickdraw you pick really depends on if you are going to use it more for Sport Climbing or Trad Climbing. The main considerations you’ll want to keep in mind is your preferred carabiner type and how much slack length you prefer. That’s why for trad climbers we recommend longer quickdraws from 12-25cms in slack.

As climbing experience and equipment will vary, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. First of all finding a mentor with experience would be a great first step in terms of starting. K2 offers ladders, pulleys and other climbing aids to suit the type of wall you hope to conquer so get in touch to learn more.

Camping Related Questions

Choosing your perfect hiking tent and how much it weighs definitely comes down not only to preference but your physical strength and length of the trip. If you’re looking for something easier to carry a lightweight hiking tent or one-man tent, may be a great choice, especially on solo journeys. These tents can weigh as little as 1.5 kgs but if you need something bigger and more sturdy, a 3.5 kg tent would be most reliable during strong weather or sharing.

Selecting a hiking tent for the family can be tricky, you definitely want there to be room for everyone without it being a nightmare to set up. 3 person tents are usually still compact enough to be light and easy to set up but offer enough space for up to 3 adults or 4 children.

Camping cookware may not be on the top of your list of gear to pack but once night falls you’ll be craving more than a tin of tuna, that's for sure! A titanium or collapsible camping cooking set can be a great asset for dinner time alongside a personal stove system that can level up those canned beans to a fully-fledged meal. Jetboil is a great option for variety and ergonomics. Don't forget cutlery, cups, towels and pot gripper to prevent burns.

Sometimes headlamps are just not enough especially if you're camping with friends and family. That’s when choosing some solar camping products can help.

To keep your everyday devices like phones, coolers and head torches charged you should look into a 10W or 18W solar panel set up and a battery bank/powerbank. We recommend looking into solar lighting strings and lanterns to conserve additional energy.
